suppress – to hold back

muffled -  to deaden the sound of, so it is not as loud

 

stunned – to be very surprised

 

stammered – to speak with a lot of stops and stutters

 

perplexed – very confused

 

glimpse – to look at quickly

dazed – to stun, and almost feel like you are in a trance

 

tattered -  torn in shreds

 

escort – to go along with

tarry – to be slow in coming or going

 

sobering – to make serious

 

bayonet – a weapon like a dagger, made to fit the end of a rifle

 

diverted – to turn the attention away from one area to another

 

conferring – to compare views when studying a problem

 

mercenaries – a soldier that serves in the military only for pay

exhaustion -  the state of being very, very tired

 

quizzical – being puzzled or curious

 

luxurious – fancy and extra special

 

currency – money

endeavor – to work for a particular goal

 

casualities –  soldiers who die in battle

retching – trying to vomit

 

mournful – to feel or show grief over something, especially a death

 

enticing – to attract by saying or promising something good

simmering -  to cook gently below the boiling point

winced – to shrink back, as in pain

 

shuttle – an instrument used in weaving

 

savoring – to taste or smell with pleasure

loom -  frame or machine for weaving

 

harboring – to give shelter to a prisoner or someone who has escaped

 

profound – very deeply felt

 

contraption – device or gadget

 

flinched – to quickly pull away from
